REMODEL - Paper Rolls and Paste: Master Toilet Closet

It could have been the most expensive toilet closets on the planet, well, maybe not as expensive half of the bathrooms in Hillsborough. In other words, hell yes I said no to de Gournay in ordering $28,000 for a few rolls of their Deco Monkeys in terracotta. It would have been fun little room for just Clem and I. And right there is where I realized, I was off my rocker. I know I said this before, but damn wallpaper is expensive these days. Sadly I see that pricing getting higher each year. Thankfully my wallpaper installer Debora is patient and understnading because my final selection took a little while to be delivered. In the end, a six month day was also gave me more perspective of what that little room was going to feel and look like. Wallpaper does make a great difference in home. I am a strong advocate for it now. This is our fourth room in the house with wallpaper and each one sets such a mood in the room. Just waiting for the sitting room to get the proper furiniture to enjoy the room.

Going back to this little project. I got lucky, I ordered the perfect wallpaper before trump took office again and becoming a victim of his crazy tariffs. I feel for anyone embarking on a construction project right now. The costs are insane and just going to get worse. Just be lucky you are not having to deal with unpredictable long lead times on things like lumber and windows. That said, while the monkey were out, I did try to find something funky or fun in it’s place. It was a struggle because, well, not a lot of good monkey wallpapers out there. I even for a hot minute considered Scalamandre’s Zebras, another love I’ve had since 2001 when I saw The Royal Tenenbaums at the AMC theater on Van Ness. That iconic wallpaper and that movie and that character sitting in that bathroom made a heavy impact on my life. I choose my daughters name from that character.

Back to the wallpaper on hand. My options were just too diverse in the end. The one reason I loved the monkey wallpaper, was the colors and the use of the metallic. I found some fun options. There was a lot of floral and collage that ended up in the mix. I am not actually sure why but the colors worked in so many of them. Then I came across a wallpaper that fit perfect to the look I was going for this tiny little room. The final selection was Zuexis & Parrasius Liebesflügel design. This organic design has deco and 70’s vibe to it. Initially we were looking at the red and gold version. When we selected the red and gold wallpaper for the sitting room, duplicating the look was not something I was considering. I really liked the design, so I was happy to see the company did not only other combo combinations, but offered custom. Considering the crazy costs of wallpaper today. Custom colors was out of the question.

The combo that was screaming at me was the dark green and gold, called Theresianisches Gruen, which is english is Theresian Green. Don’t you just love learning German. What I also loved about this sample was salmon pink stigma of the flower. In person the combo worked out great, and adds some relaxing character to the closet. It was fun to watch this room together. The wallpaper even works with the stained trim and pocket door to the toilet closet. Is this the last room to wallpaper. The short answer, yes for now. I would like to do wallpaper in the playroom eventually. But there is a few rooms that are empty and in need of furniture.
